Irish Rovers 5, N.Y. Dynamos 2
The Irish Rovers began the second half to their season Sunday with a challenge game versus the New York Dynamos, who are top of the Cosmopolitan League. Since the Rovers lead the Long Island League, it was an interesting match-up. Striker Stuart Duffin ran riot with four goals, the first a penalty after he was upended in the box.
In the second half, with Rovers leading 1-0, Kevin Daly kept the defense tight and when Duffin chipped the keeper from fully 40 yards the game seemed secure. But the Dynamos pulled one back immediately and caused some problems for the Rovers defense. The impressive Paul Edwards cooly slotted home a third for Rovers, but Dynamos scored again to make it 3-2. At this point Duffin took over, slamming home a volley to complete his hat trick, then lobbing the keeper in the last minute to make the final score 5-2.
In other matches, Rovers Reserves lost 1-0 to St. Barnabas, and Rovers over 30s won 1-0 against Silos FC with a goal from Nigel Cunniffe. Anyone interested in playing for the Rovers should contact Kevin or Paul Flynn at (718) 729-9720.
