On arrival with the 27th Infantry Battalion, the group was met by Lt. Joe Gleeson, Cpl. Ricardo Lucchesi and Cpl. Peter Fagan.
Although most of the students admitted they were “apprehensive” when arriving at the Barracks at the beginning of the week, they soon took to the military environment, receiving an introduction into the Army that included drilling, discipline, rank, structure and punctuality.
The program for the week was varied and took in a whole range of careers and opportunities that the army has to offer the aspiring recruit or cadet.
Lectures included subjects such as Irish military history, the roles and structure of the Defense Forces, recruitment, cadetships, courses, overseas missions and the life of a typical Irish Army soldier.
However, as is fitting Army life, not all of the work was completed indoors and the students were treated to weapons displays, which included display by the Army Bomb disposal unit.
