Dunne captures second straight

The sophomore from Skerries, Co. Dublin, hung up consecutive rounds of 75 to cruise to a three-stroke victory. Teammate Shanna McVeigh, a County Down sophomore, tied for 35th place at 181 (94-87). Bethune-Cookman finished fifth among teams.
Illinois’ Michelle Carroll tied for 35th place in the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout at Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, Texas. The Dublin senior carded 237 (78-80-79). Wisconsin’s Malinda Johnson shot 217 for the trophy. Illinois tied for seventh place in the 18-team field.
College of Charleston’s Brenda McLarnon tied for 21st place in the Lady Seahawk Invitational at River Landing Country Club in Wallace, N.C. The Belfast junior shot 238 (78-80-80), 10 strokes off the winning score. Campbell’s Michelle Holmes endured a nightmare second round to share 46th place in the 72-woman field. Holmes, a senior from County Mayo, carded 250 (79-95-76). Campbell was second among the 14 teams, two strokes behind UNC-Wilmington. Charleston shared third place.
Jacksonville State’s Sara Gallagher tied for 32nd place in the Samford Women’s Intercollegiate at Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Ala. The County Mayo sophomore shot 161 (80-81), 12 strokes off the winning score. Jacksonville State won the team title.
Liberty’s Paul Carey tied for 20th place in the Kingsmill Invitational at Kingsmill River Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. The Dublin senior shot 151 (77-74) to finish 10 strokes behind Navy’s Billy Hurley.

SWIMMING
The NCAA Men’s Championships found Tennessee’s Andrew Bree and Kentucky’s Steven Manley qualifying for two consolation finals apiece. Bree, a senior from Helen’s Bay, Co. Down, finished 10th overall (second in the conso race) in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:00.58. He also came in fourth in the 200-meter breaststroke conso final to place 12th overall. His time was 2:10.95.
Manley, a sophomore from Dublin, finished second in the 200-meter freestyle conso race, which placed him 10th overall. He posted a 1:46.98 clocking. He was sixth in the 400-meter freestyle, timed in 3:48.83, finishing 14th overall.

GYMNASTICS
UCLA’s Holly Murdock, a sophomore from Derriaghy, Co. Antrim, was named to the Pacific-10 All-Academic second team. A biology major, Murdock carries a 3.84 grade point average. The Bruins compete in the Southeast Regionals this Saturday at North Carolina State.

TENNIS
San Diego’s Emma Murphy won three matches last week. The Cork sophomore was successful at second singles against Southern California’s Anca Anastasiu, 6-2, 6-2, then stepped up to first singles to defeat Cornell’s Akane Kokubu, 6-2, 6-0, and Santa Clara’s Janalle Kaloi, 6-0, 6-0. The Toreros lost to USC, 5-2, but swept Cornell and Santa Clara by identical 7-0 scores.
California’s Catherine Lynch stepped up to first singles last week with mixed results. The Dublin senior enjoyed a win over Washington State’s Lorena Arias, 6-0, 6-2, as the Golden Bears prevailed, 6-1. Lynch then lost to Washington’s Claire Carter, 6-3, 6-1, with the Huskies downing Berkeley, 4-3.
North Carolina State’s Conor Taylor defeated North Carolina’s Nick Monroe, 6-3, 6-0, at first singles, although the Tar Heels took the Wolfpack, 5-2. Taylor, a junior from Dublin, then lost to Georgia Tech’s Scott Schnugg, 6-4, 6-3, as the Rambling Wreck swept State, 7-0.
Wesley’s Richie Smith prevailed at fourth singles over Villa Julie’s Mike Casalena, 6-0, 6-1. Smith is a freshman from Belfast. Wesley won, 5-2.
Winthrop’s Gary Kilduff split a pair of matches at third singles last week. The junior from Black Rock, Dublin lost to High Point’s Chris Archer, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, while his team pulled off a 5-2 victory. Winthrop then defeated Charlotte by the same score, with Kilduff successful against Marlo Santoso, 6-4, 6-2.
Evansville’s Derek Boland also won one and lost one. The Dublin junior defeated Southern Illinois’ Peter Bong, 6-3, 6-4, then lost to Butler’s Brandon Gill, 6-1, 6-1. Both matches were played at first singles. Evansville lost to both schools.
