Dunne set for 6-rounder

Hailed as Ireland’s hottest 126-pounder since Barry McGuigan, the Los Angeles-based Dunne, who is 6-0 with five knockouts, is coming off a brilliant one-round stoppage of Oscar Rosales in Oklahoma earlier this month.
He said on Monday that he was raring to go in front of what could be a large Irish contingent, including family members from Boston.
“I’m looking forward to it. I’m in good shape and on a roll,” the 23-year-old prospect said. “My family, several cousins, will be coming down from Boston, so that’s nice.”
Ron Katz, a matchmaker for Sugar Ray Leonard Promotions, which handles Dunne, described the young Dubliner’s latest opponent as a sturdy fighter despite his 6-5 (3 KOs) record.
“He’s a good tough guy who’s never been stopped,” he said. “In his last fight, he lost a decision to Angel Torres, who’s 14-2.”
Like Dunne’s other bouts since he signed with SRL Promotions, the fight will be on the undercard of an ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” show. But unlike his last two outings, which were not aired for various reasons, Katz guaranteed that Dunne’s contest with Halgrove would be screened.
“This one will definitely be on TV,” he promised.
Tickets for the SRL show at Mohegan Suns are priced at $35 and $45. For more information, call (800) 477-6849.
