Keep that in mind all the time as you write. Don’t just duplicate your resume — highlight, and expand upon, the parts of it that will be of interest to the company.
STICK TO THE POINT
Don’t ramble. The best cover letters are concise. Don’t use lots of words for the sake of it. Clarity pays off; verbosity hurts.
PRESENTATION
No one wants to read a cover letter comprised of pages and pages of closely typed text. Your letter should be clear and well presented. Use bullet points where appropriate to make the letter’s appearance appealing and accessible.
PROOFREAD AND PROOFREAD AGAIN
There must not be a single word misspelled in a cover letter. Double-check the name of the person to whom the letter is addressed. Use your computer’s spell-check function. Proofread the letter yourself. Ask someone you trust to do likewise. And then do all that again before sealing the envelope.
