Echo Careers: The art of the interview

It should go without saying that you should check the company’s website, paying particular attention to how it defines itself and its core business. Depending on the sector, the company may also have published material, such as brochures or prospectuses that you can have a look at. But give some thought as to how you can give yourself an edge when it comes to research. Is there someone you know, even vaguely, who has worked at the company or at least in the same sector? They could give you precious tips. Similarly, why not also research the company’s competitors? That way you will be able to flatter your interviewers, if necessary, by mentioning the things their firm does better than its rivals. You will also be able to make constructive suggestions as to how the company for which you are interviewing can gain advantage.

MULTIPLE INTERVIEWS
It is becoming increasingly common for recruiters to assess candidates over the course of several interviews. This is particularly the case for desirable, high-powered jobs. There may be little you can do to prepare in specific terms for all these interviews. That being so, it is best if you just keep basic rules in mind: take care of yourself physically during the whole interview period, so you stay fresh; keep perspective-if one interview doesn’t go as well as you might like, don’t panic; always emphasize your strengths — it’s as good a tactic in multiple interviews as it is for one, ‘all or nothing’ meeting.
