Echo Careers: The art of the interview

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Shake hands firmly, but not too tightly. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer, without glaring at her or him in an off-putting way. Do not slouch — use your posture to communicate alertness. And try to look positive and friendly, without grinning inanely at inappropriate moments.

Honesty is the best policy
As we noted last week, you should always play to your strengths. But that involves emphasizing things you really have done well. Do not try to invent experience or claim that you have knowledge of things that you are, in truth, ignorant of. Aside from the ethical issues involved, there is too high a risk of getting caught in the lie. If that happens, your chances of getting the job are certainly gone. If you are asked a question that you think will expose a weakness either try to steer the conversation onto more comfortable ground or explain how you feel you can rise to any challenge placed in front of you.
