Hitchner has been writing for the Irish Echo newspaper since 1991 and is also a contributing music writer to the Wall Street Journal since 1995.
The CUNY IIAS Advisory Board includes former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, New York University Professor Mick Moloney, Fordham University School of Law Dean William Treanor, Harvard University Professor Catherine McKenna, New School University Executive Vice President James Murtha, and Irish Arts Center Director Pauline Turley.
Called “arguably the pre-eminent Celtic critic in this country” by the Boston Globe newspaper (Oct. 1, 2004) and “the dean of American Irish music writers” by Dirty Linen magazine (June/July 2002), Hitchner has also written for MTV’s Sonicnet, Billboard, Oxford American, New Choices, Reader’s Digest, Publishers Weekly, Attenzione, and Business Week Careers.
In addition, Hitchner wrote six entries for “The Companion to Irish Traditional Music,” a reference book co-published in 1999 by Cork University Press and New York University Press, and the liner notes for some 60 recordings, including the Boston Pops Orchestra’s “The Celtic Album” that was nominated for a Grammy award as the best classical crossover release of 1998.
The Irish Echo congratulates Hitchner on his prestigious appointment.
