Hottest fall must-haves

Destroyed jeans

The look is rough with denim wear this season. Ripped, shredded, faded, frayed, bleached and stone-washed jeans will be en vogue as part of a rebel-casual look that is proving popular with young Hollywood fashionistas like Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Ritchie.
Most denim stores are offering some sort of variation on the destroyed look – invest in a high fashion pair from Abercrombie & Fitch, for example, or do it yourself with an old pair of jeans.
A few tips for destroying your own jeans; using a new razor blade, score the jeans in strategic areas like knees, ends and front thighs. For vintage softness, try running a steel brush over the jeans. To get the bleached look, hang your jeans on the washing line or drape them over the balcony. Wearing rubber gloves, flick at the jeans gently with a small paintbrush dipped in bleach.
Just remember – the look is frayed, not cut. Stay away from scissor-cut knees and backs of thighs, or risk being mistaken for Jon Bon Jovi circa 1986.

Sneaker-style boots

The comfort of a slouch boot combined with the funkiness of a sneaker, sneaker-boots are replacing Ugg Boots as the comfort shoe this fall.
Urban Outfitters and Nine West have some classic, converse-inspired looks, whilst online clothing store www.nordstrom.com has a great range of cute, furry styles, some of which are on sale right now. The boots look best over skinny jeans or teamed with an a-line mini and funky tights.

Vintage T-shirts

As well as being the cheapest and most cheerful way to update your wardrobe this fall, vintage t-shirts are the epitome of New York cool, as hipster Manhattanites like Chloe Sevigny and Parker Posey have demonstrated.
And the good news is – they are everywhere! Urban outfitters, H & M, American Eagle and the Cotton Factory have some nice styles, whilst Forever 21 have a fabulous range of vintage and novelty t-shirts, most of which you will pick up for less than $15.

Wide Belts

Wear them thick, plain, high and tight to funk up your favorite dress and draw attention to the slimmest part of your waistline a la Paris Hilton and Christina Aguilera, or low, loose and patterned with studs or jewels to compliment your vintage t-shirt and skinny jeans or leggings a la Sienna Miller.
Can’t wait until fall? Team your belt with a pair of smart knee-length shorts and a long tank top for smart summer chic.
Target and Scoop NYC have some funky belt styles for the coming season.

Chandelier Earrings

Dramatic, dangly earrings have become as indispensable to celebs on the red carpet as chic clutch bags.
Chandelier earrings have re-emerged spectacularly in recent years from the post-Dynasty fashion dump, with a range of sophisticated and dramatic styles that will have you embracing your inner Alexis Carrington.
On a more practical level, chandelier earrings can dress up the plainest of outfits.
Although stars like Oprah Winfrey and Eva Longoria do not allow anything less than diamonds and emeralds to adorn their earlobes, it is easy to find styles on the high street that are just as dazzling at a fraction of the cost.
Check out Laila Rowe and Le Chateau for some hot, disposable styles.

Black leggings

Big bags

The trend of oversize bags has been building up steam over the last couple of seasons and this fall it looks set to explode. Whether it’s a massive, crescent shaped bag to sling under your elbow, an oversize messenger bag to carry on your shoulder or a funky bowling bag or doctor bag to carry by the handles, bigger is better.
Purchasing a good quality oversize bag in red or black leather will prove the investment, as either will accessorize perfectly with this fall’s dark colors.

Trench coats

No longer the preserve of sleazy journalists and undercover detectives, the trench coat is a must have for any smart, sexy fall wardrobe.
This season sees the classic, neutral trench updated in bold colors, leopard skin, slinky satin and contrasting buttons and cuff trims.
Go long and structured for traditional daytime chic or short and belted for a funky, sexier look.
