Editorial: A noble son

Tragically, however, an older, more atavistic Iraq took the life of Sgt. Carvill and three of his New Jersey National Guard comrades in separate attacks last weekend.
The deaths of the guardsmen, on the weekend that the nation remembered the fallen but ultimate triumph of D-Day, was a sad reminder that the world has a long way to go yet before it can truly appreciate the full value of human life.
Frank Carvill was a doer and a giver. His work on behalf of the Irish community in the New York area and beyond was virtually the stuff of legend. This world would simply grind to halt without people like him. Well, it’s moving a little slower now.
Carvill, by virtue of his age and time served in the guard, could have avoided service in what has been a dangerous and unpredictable war. But it was no surprise to his many admirers that he chose to ship out with his unit earlier this year.
We join with Frank Carvill’s family, his friends and those who worked and served alongside him in remembering a noble son of America and Ireland who made the supreme sacrifice for a world that is a lesser place without him. Ar Dh
