New York’s hurlers almost snatched victory in last year’s championship clash against visiting Down at Gaelic Park. But “almost” might as well have been the proverbial mile. Still, that near win, as opposed to a loss, should by now only be an encouragement to this year’s New York team as it prepares to take on visiting Antrim over Memorial Day weekend at the Bronx GAA venue.
Sooner or later a New York team is going to win a championship game on home turf. And many feel that this weekend will be that time. One word emanating from the New York camp that should give many fans heart is “relaxed.” New York sides are seemingly becoming used to championship games and that is undoubtedly a necessary prerequisite to winning them. Generally, a relaxed team is able to focus on its own game rather than worrying excessively over what the opponents might do.
We hope that the fans feel relaxed too and come in big numbers to cheer on a New York team that is yet enhancing its reputation as a side that is more than able to take on opponents with a provincial record as proud as Antrim’s. So all the way, New York!
