Emerald Green: O’Brien, Long vie for top national cop post

It’s election time for the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies. The race for president of the National pits incumbent Patrick O’Brien of the Police Emerald Society of the Washington, D.C., area against Dennis Long of the Jersey City, N.J., Police Emerald Society. Mike Donegan of the Grand Council of United Emerald Societies is serving as chairman of the Board of Elections.

Omaha Emeralds anniversary

The Omaha Public Safety Emerald Society recently celebrated its second anniversary as its membership rolls continue to increase. These Midwestern Emeralds have a society that comprises public safety and law enforcement officials. According to Marty Crowley, its membership consists of police officers, firefighters, deputy sheriffs, federal agents, correction officers, probation and parole officers, court officers and those professionals in the field of criminal justice and public safety. Spring weekennd

Martin Finn and Jim Magner of the Emerald Society of the Telephone and Communications Workers have announced that the annual spring weekend will be held at the Fern Cliff House in East Durham, N.Y., from June 11-13. Holy Name Mass

The NYC Fire Department Holy Name Society celebrated its 75th anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Patrick’s Cathedral followed by a Communion Breakfast at the Hilton. FDNY Holy Name President Joe Bryant saluted a trio of NYC Fire Department Emeralds as "distinguished honorees." The shamrock trio includes John Driscoll, James Dowling, and FDNY Roman Catholic Chaplain, Rev. Father Mychal Judge, OFM. Father Judge is also chaplain for the Holy Name Society, FDNY Emerald Society and their award-winning bagpipe band.

San Fran dinner dance

It was awards galore at the first dinner dance of the San Francisco Bay Area Law Enforcement Emerald Society. President Val Kirwan received his President’s Badge and then handed out awards to the Irish Citizens of the Year Cornelius "Bud" Patterson and Mary Wright. The San Francisco Police Department’s first female officer, Mary was awarded an honorary lifetime membership award. These Bay Area Police Emeralds are the 47th Police Emerald Society to join the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies since it was launched in Washington, D.C., five years ago.

NYC Police Department Emerald Society happy with their injured reserve list and news that those on sick leave are all recovering nicely.

O’Connell milestone

For the fifth consecutive year, Jimmy O’Connell of the Chicago Police Emerald Society has the honor of being the lone "Midnight Piper" at 11:59 on May 14 at the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies’ Memorial Services in Washington, D.C.
