EU move on Irish welcomed by AOH chief

AOH national vice president Jack Meehan said he was delighted with the change of heart.
Earlier this year, Meehan wrote Taoiseach Bertie Ahern bemoaning the fact that Irish would not be among the 20 official EU languages as of May 1.
That list included such rarely heard tongues such as Maltese.
Meehan told Ahern is his letter that he was “disheartened and deeply disappointed” that the European Union had no plans to recognize Irish as one of its official languages and that the Irish government had not raised any objection to this.
