DUBLIN — A five-bedroom Victorian home in Dublin’s upmarket Foxrock suburb has set a record for the price of a home in the city’s booming property market after being knocked down at auction for £8.3 million.
The house had been expected to fetch about £5 million — below the previous record of £5.9 million set last year for a semi-detached terraced home at Sorrento Terrace, Dalkey.
Bidders, believed to represent builders attracted by the development potential of the 3.07 acres of gardens surrounding the house on Brighton Road, pushed up the price.
Though there is no planning permission for the gardens, the
unidentified buyer, whose lawyer did the bidding, will have been aware that 16 new houses in nearby Carrickmines each recently sold for about £1 million.

The house had been the family home of the late Austin Hastings, a builder, and was sold by his widow.
