Gaels beaten, 2-0

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Goalie Petroy Ellison was Kandia’s MVP as he pulled off save after from the rampant Gaels strikers in the first CSL fixture after the winter break.
Astoria’s inability to convert their chances would come to haunt them in the second half when Vince Waul connected twice in a 20-minute span (52nd, 72nd) to maintain Kandia’s perfect record (7-0, 21 points). Gene Jules and David Taylor had the assists.
“We played well,” was Gaels official Niall Sugrue’s terse comment after his side’s promotion hopes took a tremendous hit.
Gaels, fifth on the table, fell to 3-4-1, 11 points adrift of Kandia and six behind second-place New York Fury who they play this weekend.

RITCHIE WINNER
Earlier at Allerton Field, Neil Ritchie struck midway through the first half to scrap out a 1-0 win for the Gaels reserves.
According to Hemmings, the curtain-raiser was the mirror opposite of the first-team encounter, with Gaels on the rack and goalie John Watters thwarting Kandia’s youthful forwards at every turn.
The two sides had tied 3-3 before Christmas, with Astoria coming from three goals down to salvage a point at Commodore Barry Field.
With the win, the Gaels seconds improved to 4-3-2 (14), six points behind first place Fury, who they meet on Sunday.

ENGLAND COMING
England, Northern Ireland’s Group 6 World Cup qualifying opponents on March 26, will tour the United States in May.
Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men will play the U.S. national side at Soldier Field in Chicago on May 28 and Colombia at Giants Stadium on May 31.
The English are likely to travel without their two top players, skipper David Beckham and striker Michael Owen, whose club Real Madrid completes its league schedule against Real Zaragoza on May 30.
