Gaels top Brooklyn

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Astoria Gaels took on Brooklyn Shamrocks at the rugby field on Randalls Island in a rousing Junior B challenge game last Sunday. Challenges are usually meant to be like a training session, but on this occasion both teams took it deadly serious.

The Gaels dominated the first half, with Sam Yore and captain Derek McKenna putting on a show at midfield. Nestor Allen had a goal and Mike Keane 1-3 to put the Gaels up 3-8 to 6 points at the half. In the second half, Enda Lally and the two John Wards came to the fore for Shamrocks and with the help from Woods put a better look on the final score.

Best for the Gaels were Yore, Keane, Mark Bourke at center half, and Mark Kelly, while Lally, John Moore and the half forward line who kept running all day tried hardest for Brooklyn.
