Taoiseach Brian Cowen, in a follow-up to last week’s Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh House in Dublin, was hosting Irish community and business leaders Tuesday evening at the American Irish Historical Society on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
Cowen is also attending the United Nations summit on climate change where is he delivering Ireland’s address and additionally the annual opening of the General Assembly.
“Reaching a legally binding international agreement later this year is vital not only for our future prosperity but for the well-being and future of our planet. Ireland fully supports the EU’s global role and aims on climate change,” Cowen said before departing for New York.
Also due in New York this week are North First Minister Peter Robinson, and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. Both are attending the Clinton Global Initiative hosted by former president Bill Clinton.
Robinson and McGuinness will speak at a session during the four day event devoted to Northern Ireland and its peace process.
Reports indicate that the CGI will be the venue for the possible unveiling of an investment and trade package for Northern Ireland, though one contingent on the governing parties at Stormont reaching agreement on the devolution of police and justice powers.
The need for political agreement as a spur for investment has been emphasized in recent days by the new U.S. economic envoy to Northern Ireland, Declan Kelly, who is in New York for the Clinton gathering.
Reports indicate the possibility that a deal on justice and policing might actually be sealed in New York at a meeting between Robinson and McGuinness and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is attending the U.N. sessions.
