Darren Clarke started Monday’s final round of the Volvo PGA Championship six shots behind leader Colin Montgomerie and responded with a six-under-par 66. But Monty didn’t fold, shooting 69 to enjoy a three-stroke victory over Clarke, Andrew Coltart and Lee Westwood. Clarke scored 274 (68-68-72-66) for 72 holes in Wentworth, England.

Padraig Harrington found his stroke too late, working his way up the board to a 17th-place tie. He shot 282 (72-74-69-67). Paul McGinley was consistent, playing his way to a 20th-place tie at 283 (70-70-72-71), while Des Smyth explored life on both sides of the street en route to his 284 (77-69-70-68), which earned him a share of 26th place.

Euro Challenge Tour

David Higgins shared 38th place with seven others in the Muermans Real played over the Golf & Country Club of Herkenbosch in Roermond, The Netherlands. Higgins was only two shots off the first-round lead, coming in with a 70. But the numbers thereafter were 73, 73 and 78. His six-over-par 294 left him 13 strokes behind medalist Richard Gillot.

A 36-hole score of 145 or better was needed to make the cut. Failing to do so were Peter Lawrie, 146 (73-73), Paddy Gribben, 146 (77-69), and James Loughnane, 155 (73-82).

There was third-round play for neither Lynn McCool nor Aideen Rogers in the Ladies Hannover Expo 2000 Open at the Rethmar Golf Links in Germany. McCool missed the cut by just a stroke, shooting 154 (76-78). Rogers shot 156 (80-76).
