Golf Roundup: Coughlan back in the groove

Richard Coughlan put forth his finest effort on the Hooters Tour this year with a third place tie in the Middle Tennessee Classic at the Saddle Creek Golf Club in Lewisburg, Tenn. Coughlan, who is two years removed from the PGA Tour, came in with a 72-hole score of 14-under-par 274 (69-67-68-70). He was two strokes off the winning number of 272 posted by Chad Campbell, who

was victorious for the fifth time in eight outings this year.

Colleges

Toledo’s Ricky Elliott came through with the low round of 67 to move the Rockets into second place in the Mid-American Conference Championship at the Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio. Teammate Tim Rice, a senior from Rosbrien, Co. Limerick, tied for third place in the individual scramble at nine-under-par 279 (69-68-73-69). Elliott, a senior from Portrush, Co. Antrim, tied for 12th place at 289 (73-75-74-67). Also on the course for Toledo was Derry freshman David Jones, who shared 21st place with five others. Jones shot 297 (78-74-76-69). Toledo finished 14 strokes behind Kent.

Des Smyth recorded one of the lower rounds of the French Open in Versailles on Sunday, helping move him up the leaderboard to a 22nd-place finish. Smyth tacked a five-under-par 67 onto rounds of 70, 73 and 72 to yield a score of 282. Colin Montgomery was the medalist at 272. Sprinkled throughout the field were Gary Murphy, who tied for 36th place with his 284 (76-69-68-71), and Paul McGinley, who tied for 68th place at 292 (70-74-74-74). Those who didn’t clear the cut line of 145 included Philip Walton, 151 (77-74), and Eamonn Darcy, 152 (76-76).

Senior PGA Tour

Christy O’Connor, Jr. tied for 33rd place in the Home Depot Invitational at TPC at Piper Glen in Charlotte, N.C. O’Connor was one under par for the 54-hole tournament at 215 (69-72-74). He earned $7,703. Bruce Fleisher and

Hubert Green were low men at 203, with Fleisher prevailing in a playoff for the title.

PGA Tour

Keith Nolan missed the cut in the Compaq Classic at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans by six strokes. Nolan recorded rounds of 76 and 73. A 36-hole score of 143 or better was needed to advance.

Euro Seniors Tour

Joe McDermott was the low Irishman in the Beko Classic, played over the Gloria Golf Resort in Antalya, Turkey. McDermott shot one under par for 54 holes, tying for 23rd place at 215 (73-68-74) with five others. Denis O’Sullivan tied for 41st place at 220 (76-70-74), with Paul Leonard a stroke behind at 221 (75-72-74).

Unable to make the 36-hole cut with scores of 147 or better were David Jones, who shot 148 (75-73), Eddie Polland, 149 (76-73), Michael Lynch, 153 (80-73), Gordon Parkhill, 154 (78-76), Raymond Kane, 155 (78-77), Leonard Owens, 155 (79-76), Kenny Stevenson, 161 (81-80), and Michael Murphy, 163 (78-85).
