Ten would-be publicans moved a step closer to owning a pub after they were selected as finalists in the “Guinness Win Your Own Pub in Ireland” competition.

The 10 winners will now head to Ireland to take part in the final stage in the annual competition. The eventual winner will take over the ownership of Finucane’s pub in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

The competition, which has been running for five years, received a record 65,000 entries nationwide this year. Contestants were asked to complete the following phrase: “Why Guinness is my perfect pint.”

The finalists now have to show their talent for pouring the perfect pint and their skill in various pub games, including darts, and persuading the judges with their “gift of the gab.”

This years finalists are: Kelly Daugherty from Brattleboro, Vt.; Jessica Durgin from Woodbridge, Va.; Clay Farr from Clemson, S.C.; John Freisinger from Albuquerque, N.M.; Julie Lang from St. Louis; Roger Merchant from Orange, Calif.; Trevor O’Driscoll from New York City; Diane Stampleton from Elmhurst, Ill.; Boomer Mateus Wadaska from Levittown, Pa., and William Wanner from Tigard, Ore.
