Hands off, he’s ours

Things are not as bad as they once were. Ireland and the Irish do get noticed and acknowledged a good deal more often these days. But sometimes things slip back into the old familiar.
Take Daniel Day-Lewis for example. We Irish are a generous people and are all for sharing so the New York Post’s use of “English-born” in the context of
Day-Lewis’s latest Oscar gets a pass.
He was indeed born in England to an Irish-born father whose outlook on the world was rather more Anglo than Hiberno.
But we draw the line at the Daily News description of “England’s” Daniel Day Lewis. The actor is an Irish citizen living in County Wicklow. He is no more exclusively England’s now than the English-born Bob Hope was.
But, as stated, we are open to sharing, unless of course our Daniel gets himself into a bar fight.
