Rhode Island knocked off Quinnipiac, 5-0. Andy O’Boyle, a Belfast freshman, contributed the second goal, which was unassisted. The Rams are 4-3-0.
Vermont put Stony Brook away, 2-0. Belfast sophomore Tony Anderson scored the insurance goal in the 75th minute. Teammate Tim Parisi lofted a free kick his way, which Anderson headed in from five yards out. Vermont, coached by Belfast’s Roy Patton, is now 5-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in America East play.
George Mason’s Sean Malee scored his first collegiate goal in a 4-1 win over Manhattan College. Malee is a freshman from Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo. Sophomore John O’Hara was in the net, where he made seven saves. O’Hara, from Foxford, Co. Mayo, then held Lafayette scoreless in a 0-0 tie, in which he had three saves. Mason then dropped its first contest of 2002, a 2-0 loss to Alabama A&M. O’Hara had four saves. The Patriots, coached by Dublin native Fran O’Leary, are now 4-1-2.
Jon Leonard scored the final goal in Rio Grande’s 5-0 win over University of Charleston (W.V.). Leonard is a senior from Belfast. Rio is 7-0-0.
Charleston also fell to Mercyhurst, 3-2. Shane McGuckin, a freshman from County Longford, opened the scoring for Mercyhurst, which is now 6-0-0.
Boston College improved to 5-1-0 with victories over West Virginia and Boston University by identical 2-1 scores, followed by a 3-1 triumph over Georgetown. Dubliner Ed Kelly coaches the Eagles.
Barry Gorman’s Penn State squad split a pair of matches last week. They toppled Towson, 3-1, then lost a two-overtime heartbreaker to Big 10 rival Indiana, 1-0. The Nittany Lions are now 6-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big 10. Gorman is a Belfast native.
Another Belfast product, Alan Dawson, has Old Dominion off to a 4-2-0 start. Last week, they downed American, 3-2, in overtime, and won their first Colonial Athletic Association contest of the season, defeating North Carolina-Wilmington, 5-0.
Joe Behan has New York University off to a fine start. The Violets romped over the College of Staten Island, 7-1, last week, then lost their first University Athletic Association game of the season to Rochester, 3-1. NYU is 5-2-1 overall. Behan, a Dublin native.
Wingate was cruising along with a 4-1-1 record before hitting a speed bump that has seen the Bulldogs lose their last three matches. Gary Hamill’s team lost to South Carolina-Spartanburg, 2-1, Lander, 4-3, and Francis Marion, 1-0. Coach Hamill is a Belfast man.
Christian Brothers lost to Lynn University, 2-1. Lynn is ranked second in Div. II. Gareth O’Sullivan, a Ballina, Co. Mayo native, coaches CBU. The Bucs are 2-4-1.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Hofstra is on a roll. With Dublin senior Elaine O’Connor scoring the first and winning goal, they defeated Marist, 3-0. Junior defender Dolores Deasley assisted on another tally. She is from Drumkeen, Co. Donegal. Hofstra then began its CAA season with a 2-1 win over George Mason. O’Connor had an assist. Hofstra is 7-1-1 overall.
Slippery Rock’s Charlene Reynolds took absolutely no time adapting to the game in America, scoring the first goal of the season for the Rock in its 6-1 win over Salem International. Reynolds, a freshman from Ennis, Co. Clare, later scored the first goal and had an assist in a 6-0 victory over Mercy. She also picked up an assist in a 3-0 win over St. Vincent. Slippery Rock, coached by Cork native Noreen Herlihy, is 6-0-0.
Northern Kentucky’s Aisling Callaghan has continued to produce. The Dublin junior scored the third goal in the Norse’s 3-1 victory over Southern Indiana. She then put the first point on the board in a 3-0 victory over Missouri-St. Louis. Next up was a 4-0 win over Quincy University, with Callaghan earning an assist on NKU’s first goal. Northern Kentucky is now 9-0-1 and ranked first in Div. II.

Keene State won a big one over Western Connecticut State, 2-0. The Owls, ranked fifth in the region and coached by Denise Lyons, a native of Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, took down the region’s second ranked team. Keene is 6-1-1.
CROSS COUNTRY
Providence College’s Roisin McGettigan placed fifth in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis. The Wicklow senior ran the 5,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 18.6 seconds. Teammate Mary Cullen, a sophomore from Sligo, was seventh in 21:21.7. They preceded Deirdre Byrne, a Providence sophomore from Avoca, Co. Wicklow, who was 31st in 21:59.8, and Emer O’Shea, a senior from Limerick, who was 32nd in 22:00.3. Michigan State’s Michelle Carson provided the winning run, timed in 20:41.6. The Friars’ women finished third in the team scoring behind champion Michigan State and Arizona State.
In the men’s heat, Providence sophomore Patrick Guidera finished in 53rd place, with a time of 25:10.4. Guidera comes from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. Brigham Young’s Kip Kangogo won the race in 23:38.9. The Providence men were sixth in a race won by Oregon.
