Heartbreak for Irish lads

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Erwin Carrillo broke Irish hearts with a 104th minute golden-goal winner in the 3-2 thriller at the Sheikh Khalifa Stadium.
Colombia had led 2-0 through Edixon Perea (11th) and Victor Montano (73rd) but substitute Kevin Doyle (85th) and Paddy McCarthy (90th) struck late to take the titanic battle into extra time.
Defenders Stephen Paisley and Stephen Kelly had booked Ireland’s place in the second round with a goal apiece in a 2-0 victory over Mexico in Al Ain last Friday.
The result in their final game of the first round allowed Ireland to top Group E with seven points. Ivory Coast finished second following a goalless tie with Saudi Arabia.
It was a costly win, though, for Gerry Smith’s lads.
Eighteen-year-old Liverpool midfielder Darren Potter and Jesus Palacios were sent off for fisticuffs just before half time, while Glenn Whelan and Kelly both picked up second yellows that ruled them out of the Colombia match.
Ireland dominated Mexico from kick-off and deservedly took the lead through Paisley’s header from a Willo Flood free kick (35th).
Paisley had earlier scored in the 2-2 draw with Ivory Coast, who were denied victory when Stephen Elliott’s third goal in as many matches pegged back Arouna Kone’s brace.
Kelly finished off the Mexicans five minutes from time when he tapped the ball into an empty net after goalie Jose Martinez failed to hold an Eamon Zayed cross.
In their second match in Group E, Mexico had drawn 1-1 with the Saudis after Fausto Pinto (30th) canceled out Naji Majrasghi’s opener (15th).

U.S. make last eight
First half goals by Justin Mapp (7th) and Ed Johnson’s third penalty of the tournament (43rd) in a 2-0 decision over Ivory Coast in Dubai on Monday secured a quarterfinal date for the United States against Argentina this Friday.
The Argentines edged Egypt 2-1 in extra time, courtesy of skipper Fernando Cavenaghi (27th, 110th). Rida Metwaly (42nd) scored for Egypt.
The U.S. had advanced to the second round by blanking Korea 2-0 in Abu Dhabi last week on Johnson’s spot kicks (13th, 24th).
Beaten 3-1 by Germany earlier, the Americans topped Group F with six points, ahead of Paraguay on goal difference.
Zak Whitbread (77th) got the U.S. lone response to strikes by Chelsea’s Robert Huth (47th), Piotr Trochowski (60th) and Sebastian Kneissl (63rd) for the Germans, who finished bottom of the group.
