Hilary, we hardly knew ye

While Irish phenoms JJ72 haven’t been around long enough to earn one of those VH1 “Behind the Music” specials, the precocious mites have managed to skip the drinking and the hype, and have proceeded directly to the breakup stage. Bassist Hilary Woods has announced that she and the band have parted company, effective, oh, about 10 minutes ago.
A note on the band’s official website broke the news that the guitarist “has decided to pursue other interests at this point in her life,”
JJ72 leaped onto the world stage last October with their critical and commercial success, “I to Sky.” Unfortunately, after a few weeks at the top of the music charts, the album dropped out of sight. Their follow-up single, “Formulae,” didn’t contain the (ahem) recipe for success — too formulaic? — but there’s hope for the band yet. They’ve been nominated for two Meteor Ireland Music Awards — for Best Irish Group and Best Irish Album — and they stand a good chance of walking away with at least one statue.
But win, lose or draw, remaining JJ72 members Mark Greaney and Feargal Matthews will soldier on as duo rather than a trio. Hilary wants out.
According to the band’s website, there are no hard feelings.
“I wish Mark and Fergal continued success in the band,” said Hilary. “And [I] thank JJ72 fans for their support.”
