Efforts continue to rename a Manhattan street after the Mayo native and human rights attorney.
Now there are plans afoot to name a scholarship in his memory to be awarded annually by Dublin City University.
The scholarship will allow an economically disadvantaged student from County Mayo to study at the college.
Details of the scholarship will be announced at a reception on Friday, March 13 at Rosie O’Grady’s in Manhattan.
The reception is being hosted by attorney Brian O’Dwyer and his wife, Marianna. O’Dwyer was for many years Durkan’s law partner. The two men were also cousins.
Contributions to the scholarship can be made through the Irish American Endowment for Education for the Dublin City University. The endowment is registered in the U.S. as a 501(c)3 charity. Details are available by calling Rosa Fallon at (212)571-7100.
Frank Durkan, who for years was in the front line of every important U.S. legal case linked to the Northern Ireland conflict, died at the age of 76 in November, 2006.
