?Intermission? serves up suprises

The real test came when ?Intermission? had its U.S. premiere as the centerpiece of this year?s Film Fleadh. Thankfully, it lived up to all its hype. In addition, the fast-paced, youthful film was also able to throw a few surprises at the audience.
Dead-on Dublin accents and enough track suit bottoms to make anyone groan and laugh at the same time, ?Intermission? is the story of a group of seemingly unconnected Dubliners and how they all end up players in each one?s drama.
It begins seemingly innocuously, with Cillan Murphy?s character having broken off relations with his longtime girlfriend in the hopes she would realize how much she needs him.
She rebounds better than expected, however, and takes up with an older, married banker. This leads Murphy to seek revenge, which is also on the mind of the banker?s jilted wife.
Also in the mix of vexed men is a local bus driver who has lost his job, thanks to a neighborhood kid?s hijinx.
Farrell comes in at the right time, and convinces his fellow sore mates to concepts an elaborate plot to get cash and the girl in one fell swoop. It is assumed he is just in it for the fun of it, as the other two have something to gain back.
One thing that will shock is the amount of violence. It is not the typical gunfighting and war-epic gore that have moviegoers talking, but the kind of senseless, everyday brutality that has to go on every day.
Though that aspect and a great accompanying soundtrack may hint at an entirely grittier story, there is a sweetly sappy plot intertwined in all this. The entire trip, however, is entertaining enough that anyone who likes a good story can enjoy it.
?Intermission? starts with a bang, and never lets down. Even if the story veers toward the predictable guy-tries-to-win-girl-back plotline, inside jokes moviegoers from Dublin and afar can appreciate make it a worthwhile trip to the movies.
