Standing in the way of a perfect week for the Gaels was Niamh Dwyer and the Monmouth Hawks.
Dwyer, a sophomore from Thurles, Co. Tipperary, threw in 19 points in the Hawks? 63-53 win over Iona. She shot 7-for-19 from the floor, including 3-for-8 from long distance, and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. She also had three assists and three steals. Fahy contributed 10 points for Iona, on 3-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the line. She was limited to only two rebounds, but blocked two shots. Monmouth moved to 4-1 with the win.
Iona then picked up a road win over Loyola (Md.), 69-66. Fahy scored 16 points, on 4-for-10 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the stripe. She had four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Iona (3-3, 2-0 Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference) then prevailed over Rider, 77-58. Fahy?s 33 points came on 15-for-25 shooting from the floor, plus 3-for-3 from the foul line. She also grabbed eight rebounds (six offensive), and had four assists and two steals in 32 minutes.
Kate Maher had a double-double as Sacred Heart defeated Yale, 79-68. The Waterford senior brought down a career-high 14 rebounds and scored 10 points, hitting 4 of 6 from the field (1 of 2 from 3-point land) and 1 of 2 from the foul line. The Pioneers (5-1) continued their assault on the Ivy League with a 71-47 drubbing of Princeton. Maher scored seven points, shooting 3-for-7 from the floor, making her only 3-point try. She also had five rebounds.
Kim Fitzpatrick scored seven points to help Quinnipiac (2-2) defeat New Hampshire, 82-76. The Waterford junior made 3 of 6 from the floor, including 1 of 2 from 3-point territory. She was also credited with six assists and three steals.
Bridgeport?s Laura Deeney scored two points and handled three rebounds in a 65-48 loss to Queens. The sophomore from Falcarragh, Co. Donegal shot 1-for-2 from the floor in 11 minutes.
Mellissa Prunty scored two points for Oklahoma City in an 86-47 blowout of Central Oklahoma. The sophomore from Moyne, Co. Longford went 2-for-3 from the foul line. She also grabbed three rebounds and blocked one shot in just four minutes on the floor.
MEN?S BASKETBALL
Chris Butler enjoyed some quality minutes in St. Thomas Aquinas? 97-86 win over Molloy. The sophomore from Ballymena, Co. Antrim scored 10 points in just eight minutes of action. He shot 3-for-5 from the floor and converted all four free throws. The Spartans are 4-1 with the win.
Middlebury ran off three victories last week, with Dublin junior Simon Behan starting in the backcourt. Behan had four points, shooting 2-for-3 from the floor, as well as six rebounds and three assists in an 83-68 victory over Southern Vermont. Behan chipped in with six points in a 90-80 win over Castleton State. He shot 1-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-8 from the stripe. He also picked up four rebounds and four assists. Middlebury (5-1) then defeated Hamilton, 84-77, with Behan scoring nine points in 18 minutes on the floor. He hit 3-for-6 from the floor, including 1-for-2 from airmail territory, and 2-for-2 from the foul line.
