Irish Echo Editorial: A fond farewell

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

For more than 14 years and for 750 issues, give or take a few, I’ve directed the news coverage of this vital and estimable newspaper. I had the good fortune to take over from the legendary Jack Thornton, who bequeathed to me an equally legendary product as well as a loyal readership worthy of — and accustomed to — honest, intelligent and unflinching journalism. I worked under two vigorous and visionary publishers, Claire Grimes and now Sean Finlay, in whose steady hands the paper rests today. And I’ve had the pleasure and great privilege of toiling in the trenches with one of the finest newspaper staffs to be found anywhere. These 14-plus years have been momentous ones for Ireland and Irish-America, and no less so for me. I leave with wonderful memories as well as the confidence that the Irish Echo’s best days lie ahead. It’s been a great run. Thank you all.
