Irish Echo Editorial: Honor the man

Some believe that this would be best accomplished with the renaming of a street in his honor, a long-cherished custom in New York City. Others take the view that some kind of street-level memorial, perhaps with the names of others from the area killed in Iraq, would be the best way to mark the community commitment and national honor so vividly represented by various individuals, among them Sgt. Carvill.
The fact that Carvill was not a resident of Queens should not be an obstacle.
His heart was quite clearly in the borough, judging by his work on behalf of people living within its boundaries — immigrant, transplant and native-born.
And judging by the closeness of the voting at community board level there is clearly no insurmountable opposition to bestowing a visible, public recognition of Carvill’s devotion in life to his fellow Americans.
We hope this obvious common ground will result in a dialogue between the various parties involved in this unsettling affair.
Given that he clearly has the whip hand in political terms, it might be incumbent on Councilman Eric Gioia to convene a meeting of all the interested parties so as to soothe hurt feelings and work this matter out as quickly as possible.
Frank Carvill’s memory deserves nothing less.
