DUBLIN – Exports to the US soared by 39 percent in the first five months of this year, according to the latest non-EU trade figures issued by the Central Statistics Office.
Imports from the US were up by almost 28 percent during the five months.
Despite the economic downturn, exports to the US during May rose by 12.5 percent while imports dropped by less than one percent.
Overall, non-EU exports were up 13 percent during May and imports were down 4 percent.
In January to May, non-EU exports were up 31 percent.

Exports of organic chemicals were up 65 percent and electrical machinery increased by 58 percent.
Overall, imports during the five months were up 16 percent.
Imports of transport equipment other than road traffic vehicles soared by 209 percent, while cars dropped by 35 percent, due to the end of the consumer boom of last year.
Computer equipment imports were up 16 percent and electrical machinery was up 23 percent.
