Irish government welcomes Obama rights moves

Ireland has consistently called for the closure of Guantanamo and the bringing to trial or release of detainees held there, a department statement said.
“I warmly commend President Obama for his determination to close Guantanamo in the shortest possible time. It is highly significant that he has moved on this issue so quickly,” said Minister Martin.
“As I have previously stated, Ireland is ready in this new context to examine how we may be supportive of the United States Government as it proceeds towards the closure of this detention center. I will be discussing with my EU colleagues how the European Union might approach the issue,” Martin said.
There have been calls in Ireland for the government to take in some detainees in Guantanamo who are ultimately released from U.S. custody.
Martin also welcomed the new president’s order in relation to interrogation methods, which, he said, would “have the effect of clearly prohibiting the use of torture or any enhanced interrogation techniques tantamount to torture.”
It was also most important, he said, that the CIA was now to close all existing detention facilities and would be prohibited from operating detention facilities in the future.
In respect to so-called “extraordinary rendition,” a controversy which has prompted accusations of rendition flights operated by the CIA using Shannon airport, Martin said that Ireland had consistently opposed the practice.
“I welcome the commitment to review U.S. policy for transferring individuals to third countries to be sure that it complies with all obligations, and is sufficient to ensure that individuals do not face torture and cruel treatment if transferred,” Martin said.
His words were among a general chorus of approval and good will coming out of Ireland in the week of the 44th president’s inauguration.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said that the new presidency offered hope to the global community with Obama’s commitment to re-engage positively with nations across the world.
“President Obama has already shown himself to be a charismatic leader with the drive and vision necessary to bring about real change,” Kenny said.
“The president’s inauguration address made it clear that he intends to re-engage with the global community. In a time of economic turmoil where peace is threatened throughout the world, President Obama’s words offer hope and his commitment is very welcome.
“The president faces colossal challenges but I am certain that he will be able to meet every problem that faces him and I offer him my warmest congratulations and support,” Kenny said.
