Irish grab point in Bari with late goal

February 17, 2011

The Group 8 World Cup game began dramatically when Italy’s Giampaolo Pazzini was redcarded for a foul on John O’Shea in the 3rd minute. The 10-man home team, however, struck in the 10th minute with a goal by Vincenzo Iaquinto. Thereafter, Italy mainly sat back and let the Irish try to use their numerical advantage. The strategy worked until a long ball by goalkeeper Shay Given was knocked down by Caleb Folan for Keane to slot home at close range. Ireland continued to press in the dying moments, hoping to inflict the first ever defeat on an Italian team at Bari. They were content, nonetheless, with the 1-1 tie after the disappointment of the same scoreline against Bulgaria in Dublin last Saturday.
