Their flight from Ireland had arrived early at Newark and they faced a nine-hour delay. They had heard there had been cancellations and Tracy Dargan was anxious not to miss work the next day. So the women opted for the earlier flight.

According to some media outlets, ground staff advised adults who were traveling with small children not to fly on 3407 because conditions were expected to be very turbulent.
