Jersey Mass will remember famine

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Following the 11 a.m. Mass there will be a procession to Friendship Park on the corner of Main Street and Frances Place where the new Great Irish Hunger Memorial will be dedicated and blessed by Father Daniel Cahill of St. Ann’s.
Designed by artist Phil Sloan and Monmouth County Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 2 President, Jack Sullivan, the memorial is dedicated to raising awareness of the Great Hunger.
According to organizers, the previous monument had been vandalized, including having the plaques removed.
A luncheon, with entertainment by Bob Hurst of Philadelphia’s Bogside Rogues, will end the day’s activities. It will be held at the Bayshore Knights of Columbus Hall, Route 36 and Euclid Avenue in Middletown. Details from Alice Griffin at (732)895-7399 or shoreirishfestpr@yahoo.com.
