Kenyan captures Dublin Marathon

Not that he’s left the farm behind or anything — the check’s going straight in the mail to his parents.
His winning time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 25 seconds was just short of Jerry Kiernan’s course record, but it was still enough to leave a field containing much more experience than he’d be used to trailing in his wake. Another Kenyan, Luka Cherono, who is no relation, 30 seconds behind him in second. Zacharia Mpolokeng of South Africa, who came to Dublin as the defending champion, was just under a minute behind in third.
Those three had dominated most of the latter part of the race with another Kenyan, Geofrey Kinyua, also in the hunt. As the race exited Phoenix Park, however, just three miles from the finish, the two Cheronos stretched their legs and raced clear. Frederick made his burst on O’Connell Street with just under a mile remaining and held the lead to the line.
The women’s race was won by Lidia Vassilevskaia of Russia in a course record 2:36.56, more than two minutes ahead of Kenya’s Anne Jelagat Kibor. Scotland’s Kenny Herriot took the wheelchair race in 1:52.48.
