Lansdowne Rugby Club fall to Rockaway

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The Lansdowne Rugby Club fell in its second divisional match last Saturday in Van Corltandt, losing a tough match, 29-33, to the Rockaway Fish-heads RFC. The Fish-heads, mildly notorious for their "running of the bulls" event an the annual Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade, clung to the lead despite Lansdowne’s desperate assaults in the closing minutes.

Rockaway had benefited from rough officiating and lackluster Lansdowne play earlier in the match. B. McKeown, R. Connelly, N. Bruella, and J. Freeman each went over the Rockaway tryline in the losing cause. The Lansdowne B side salvaged a few league points in trouncing Rockaway in the second game.

The Lansdowne’s next match is Saturday, Sept. 25, against the Montauk RFC in Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx. Montauk is the perennial champion in Div. II, and the match presents a serious challenge to a Lansdowne team looking to right its league record at 2-1. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

The Lansdowne RFC train Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. in Van Cortlandt, at 260th and Broadway. Clubroom and shower facilities are provided by the Lansdowne Pub, opposite Van Cortlandt. The Lansdowne invites all interested players to call player/coach Sean Rochford at (718) 994-7871.
