The Lansdowne Rugby Club kicked off its 1999 Div. II season by beating the Manhattan RFC last Saturday on Randalls Island.
With time running down, Padraig Ging of Laois bulled over the Manhattan try line from a ruck at 5 yards out to put the Lansdowne up 27-20. The Lansdowne had come back from a 10-0 deficit only to have the game tied against them with minutes to spare. Meeting the challenge, the Lansdowne plowed back into Manhattan territory to lock the victory as time ran out.
Similar high drama followed in the B game. After once again fighting back from a 11-0 deficit to lead 12-11, the B’s faced a grim but doomed charge by Manhattan, culminating in a missed penalty kick from 30 yards out. Winger Jay Anonomie had scored the winning try on a burst into the Manhattan corner.
The Lansdowne’s next match is Saturday, Sept. 18, against the Rockaway RFC in Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
The team trains Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., also in Van Cortlandt. Clubroom and shower facilities are provided by the Lansdowne Pub, opposite Van Cortlandt. The Lansdowne invites all interested players to call player/coach Sean Rochford at (718) 994-7871.
