LGAA Previews Humbled Cavan look to rebound

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Monaghan vs. Mayo, at Rockland, noon

Both sides had good victories at the weekend. However, Mayo looked more impressive with their power and panache against champions Cavan, running out to a 4-8 to 0-11 victory Sunday at Van Corlandt Park.

Monaghan, meanwhile, strolled past Rockland at Gaelic Park without leaving second gear. If they’re to beat Mayo, however, it may take overdrive.

Joanne and Cathy McKenna will score most for the Westerners, but the reemergence of Denise Durnion will also pose a serious problem for the Ulster defense.

For Monaghan, Sandra Swinburne and Sheila Sexton will be to the fore. Reports from the Monaghan camp suggest they have the stuff of winners. Sunday will be the real litmus test.

Will Cavan ever be as slow to start again? We’ll get the answer on Sunday. The Breffini girls were flat-footed and still napping when the game against Mayo was 20 minutes old. Karen Shavely, Nuala Carroll and Katie Pennell will have to improve if their pulpit position is to be retained. Elsewhere, they have to tighten up.

Kerry are the new kids on the block. They slipped past a few contenders in the opening rounds. However, the surprise element is now long gone. Mags Dineen, Maureen O’Driscoll and Clarie Tracey will be in good shape on Sunday. If they gel as a unit, they won’t be far way. But Cavan get the nod to bounce back.
