LGAA Roundup Creighton goal puts Cavan in Kearney final

Cavan 1-6, Leitrim 0-8

Aisling Creighton’s late goal after a solo run gave Cavan the victory in the second semifinal of the Anne Kearney Cup.

Leitrim opened the scoring with a point from Ann Marie McMunn. Cavan’s Catherine Russell’s’ attempt to equalize came at the post a minute later to find Ger Mahon, who made no mistake taking her point. The Cavan defense Olive Wilson, Pauline Coleman, Olive Lynch and Geraldine Finn were kept under severe pressure for much of the first half as Leitrim’s forwards looked for their chances to score. Leitrim’s free taker Sadie Bolger was on form and converted three frees to points. Just before the halftime whistle, Ger Mahon converted a free for Cavan to leave the half-time score Leitrim 0-4, Cavan 0-2.

Cavan took the first score of the second half with a point from Louise McCambridge. Leitrim replied moments later with a point from a free by Sadie Bolger. Cavan gained possession with Ger Mahon converting another free. Cavan’s forwards found it difficult to take scores as Leitrim’s Colette O’Sullivan, Connie Reddington, Kathleen Hickey and Una Burke did some great defending. Ger Mahon converted another free for Cavan and they continued to have possession, but many chances went wide. Leitrim’s AnnMarie Snee took a point from play and receiving a great pass from Mira Grogan. Cavan were next to score with points from Louise McCambridge and Rosie O’Reilly. At this point with less than 10 minutes left Leitrim are up by a mere point. Sadie Bolger increased the lead to 2 points with a 14-yard free. As time marched, Leitrim looked like they were on their way to the final. However, it was not to be as Cavan’s savior Aisling Creighton went on her solo run.

Leitrim stars were Colette O’Sullivan, Ann Marie Snee, Ailish Dineen, Una Burke, Mira Grogan, Mairead Casey, Connie Reddington and Kathleen Hickey.
