LGAA Roundup Ulster wins Railway Cup opener

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Ulster 4-9, Munster 1-5

Ulster proved to be too strong for Munster in the first round of the Railway Cup Championship. This was a very sporting match, with some beautiful displays of football from both teams. Ulster were first to get on the board through two back to back points from Tracey Rice. Shortly there after they added points from Joanne McKenna and Clare Tracey.

Munster slowly started to get into the game and managed to register a point from Teresa Meade and a long-range goal from AnnMarie McMunn. As the half went on the teams started to get to know their new-found team mates. Fullback Moira Grogan from Ulster excelled at full-back catching everything in her midst. She also showed that she has a great kick out sending the ball way beyond midfield. Cathy McKenna and Karen Shalvey would each add a point for Ulster and Catherine Walsh a point for Muster before the half ended.

The second half saw Munster get in the game more but there possession advantage was not realized on the score board. AnnMarie McMunn, tightly marked by Monica Slevin, was working hard in the middle of the field, trying to work the ball into the forward line of Teresa Meade, Siobhan Neville and Camie O’Shea. Teresa Meade did manage to convert one ball to a point and Mary Kearney soon followed with two points taken from frees. Catherine Walsh was always a danger woman when she got the ball. However, Ulster were not to be denied. Some beautiful ball passing to Cathy McKenna resulted in two goals. These were swiftly followed by points from Karen Shalvey, Joanne McKenna and Clare Tracey.

Ulster will now await the winners of Leinster and Connaught to decide who will be Railway Cup Champions.
