LGAA Roundup: Walsh, Bolger help Leitrim stave off Mayo

Leitrim 3-5, Mayo 1-9

With Leitrim holding an early 1-2 to 0-2 lead, Mayo tied the game with a goal from Joanne McKenna, whose shot went high into corner of the net. Mayo took the lead with a point from McKenna, but it was short lived as Leitrim’s Colette McElligot sent a long high ball into the forward line that bounced over the keeper’s head. Sadie Bolger added to the scoreline by converting three free kicks. Mayo fought back with great play from Ellen McGrail, Cathy McKenna and Theresa O’Malley and were rewarded with points by O’Malley and McKenna to leave the halftime score Leitrim 2-5 to Mayo 1-5.

In the second half, Mayo fought and tied the game. But Leitrim gained the lead again late in the game with a goal from Kathleen Walsh.

Best for the winners stars were Colette McElligot, Sadie Bolger, Kathleen Walsh, Pat Meada, Ann Marie McMunn and keeper AnnMarie (Spike) McCrumlish. For Mayo, Ellen McGrail, Joanne McKenna, Colette McGoldrick and Karen McCaffrey were best.

Leitrim: Tracey Rice 0-1, Kathleen Walsh 2-0, Sadie Bolger 0-4, Colette McElligot 1-0.

Mayo: Joanne McKenna 1-2, Kathy McKenna 0-1, Ellen McGrail 0-1, Theresa O’Malley 0-2, Colette McGoldrick 0-4.

Na Fianna 1-9, Rockland 2-5

Rockland had a dream start to the game with a goal from full forward Lorraine Kiernan followed by a point from Mags Dineen in the first couple of minutes. Na Fianna settled into the game and Alison Lineen put them on the scoreboard with two points from play. Na Fianna kept play in the Rockland defense and were rewarded with a point from Lineen. Rockland replied with nice passing from Kerry Ann Galvin to Mags Dineen, who found M’bh Brennan on the wing. Brennan took her point well.

After Ann Ryan scored, Rockland leveled the game with a point from Lorraine Kiernan. This was short lived as Na Fianna’s Eimer Curran and Ann Ryan put points over the bar to leave them ahead 2 points at the break. The second half opened with Na Fianna increasing their lead with points from Marie Curran (free kick) and Maree Maloney. Rockland replied with a goal from Alice Kivlehan before Na Fianna’s Marie Curran pointed another free. Rockland replied with a point from half back Joanna Hoenninger. Rockland continued to seek the scores they needed to tie or win the game, but Na Fianna held out and took the game. Best for the winners were Michelle Davis, Caroline Conway, Maureen Tuohy, Alison Lineen, Grace Kelly, Helena Champion, Eimer Curran and Ann Ryan. For Rockland, Kelly Gorman, Colleen McElroy, Alice Kivlehan, Cathy Dunleavy, Joanie Foley, Mags Dineen, Shauna Flynn and Joanna Hoenninger played well.

Monaghan 4-8, Chiarrai 2-6

Monaghan took their first championship points after a few years of many narrow losses. The enjoyed plenty of possession throughout the first half. Their forwards and midfield were in top form and were ahead 4-5 to Chiarrai’s 2 points at halftime. After the break, Chiarrai settled into the game, putting plenty of pressure on the Monaghan defense and were rewarded with 2 goals and 4 points to bridge the gap, but Monaghan’s lead was never really in danger.

Best for the winners were Noreen Reilly in goals, Liz Collins, Trina Wall, Noreen O’Reilly, Norma McCarthy, Frances Brennan, Pauline Dillon, Mary Nash, Maddy Purcell, Maudy Lynn and Catherine Donohoe. Chiarrai’s best were Adrienne McCarthy, Gemma Mullen, Mary Tuohy, Ann Hanrahan and Laura Gannon.

Monaghan: Frances Brennan 2-0, Mary Nash 1-0, Norma McCarthy 0-2, Maudy Lynn 0-1, Pauline Dillon 0-1, Catherine Donohoe 1-2, Maddy Purcell 0-1.

Chiarrai: Sheila Frayne 1-1, Elaine Gillespie 1-0, Ann Hanrahan 0-2, Mary Tuohy 0-2, Orla Doyle 0-1.
