Limerick goal blitz overpowers Waterford

February 16, 2011

Tadgh O’Callaghan opened Limerick’s account with a point after two and a half minutes. Waterford wasted little time in responding through John Redmond’s free, but the rest of the opening stanza was all Limerick.
Dave Simms was on song from both frees and play, tallying 0-5 in the first half. O’Callaghan was Limerick’s other top performer as they built their early lead. Waterford were in the opposite position just a week ago as they blew the halftime lead in their loss to Clare.
So they knew it could be done. Visiting center forward Shane Walsh set Waterford on the right track scoring the first 0-3 of the second half and the comeback was on.
Simms interrupted with a free for Limerick, but Waterford came right back. Roy Henley pointed from a sideline cut and John Redmond added another after catching well under pressure. Waterford’s Jamie Duggan and Limerick sub Tadgh Lyons got involved in some illegal activities and were shown the line for their troubles.
Waterford came roaring back after the delay with a great point from Tomas Maher that tied the match. When their excellent center back Victor O”Shea neatly placed substitute Aiden Sweeney with a fine pass, Sweeney buried his chance. Waterford had the lead and the momentum.
It was all going the Munster men’s way when Henley chipped in with another point. Then in a matter of two minutes it all unraveled. Simms went for a goal on a free, and the New York county man buried it. Waterford still led by a point, but no for long. Tadgh O’Callaghan mis-hit a point attempt, and somehow Waterford keeper Ian Duggan lost the handle and could only watch helplessly as the slithoar trickled over the goal line.
When Dennis McCarthy raised Limerick’s third green flag in that two-minute span, Waterford could well have raised the white flag for surrender.
Of course they didn’t, battling hard to the final whistle as Walsh and Redmond added a point each. But it was too little, too late as Limerick improved to 3-0 while Waterford slumped to 1-2.
