DUBLIN – With offers of over £3,000 for the night’s work. London companies are poaching some of the cream of Ireland’s catering staff to work for the millennium New Year’s Eve.

Offers of over three times the going rate for banqueting staff in Dublin is luring staff to places like the Millennium Dome in London.

"I believe the Dome are looking for catering staff and are trying to poach here in Dublin," said Karl Monahan, boss of the KM Catering company. "They are offering £3,000 for the night and your expenses paid. You can’t blame staff if they are attracted by that sort of money,"

Having a good time while seeing in the third millennium is looking like an increasingly expensive business as casual waiters and waitresses and kitchen and bar staff are seeking £750 to £1,000, babysitters are looking for over £500 for the night and taxi drivers are planning to triple their rates.

Monahan said the huge wage rates for the night will force many hotels to close down for the night.

"We had to turn down one function which would have involved half a million pounds turnover. We would have needed 80 casual staff for the night and we just couldn’t guarantee our client that we would get them."
