Tipperary native Damien Martin scored a one-stroke victory recently in the annual Guinness Metropolitan Irish Open Golf Tournament, held at Harbour Pines Golf Club in Somers Point, N.J.

One stroke behind was Tom Meaney of Clare, with Peter Plower of Galway and Jim Molyneaux of Kerry two strokes behind. Eddie Donohue of Galway, Jim Dufficy of West Orange and Peter McLoughlin were one stroke further back.

John Neilan of Roscommon won the low gross despite a valiant effort from Meaney, Donohue and Dufficy.

Separate prizes for Saturday and Sunday were also awarded for net (Plower, Molyneaux, Dennis O’Sullivan, Dufficy, Martin, Donohue), gross (John Neilan, Syl Nugent and Dufficy), closest to the pin (Plower, John Costello, Martin and Donohue) and long drive (Tim Murphy and Gerry Henshaw Jr.).

In the women’s section, Bernadette Linuane won the gross and net, followed by Sharon Mooney and Rita Plower.

The tournament was open to all golfers affiliated with the 17 Irish-related golf clubs in the New York Metropolitan area.
