The report into clerical abuse in the Dublin archdiocese is but the latest nail in the coffin of the kind of church structure that has no future in Ireland or anywhere else. What has to happen now is an effective reformation of that structure, one that brings the workings of the church into line with the standards of a modern civil society.
This has nothing to do with faith but rather with the church temporal, or corporate as some might view it.
The failings at the top of the Irish church have, we all know now, been massive.
It’s time for some at the top to take their leave.
Archbishop Martin isn’t one of them. He and those like him are desperately needed, now more than ever.
