Mayo cruise into final

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

This game proved to be the only game played after a scheduling snafu. There was no referee for the first Semi-final between Cavan and Kerry/Donegal.
At the time of going to press no reschedule date has been set.
In the second semi-final Mayo lined out without the services of Edel Reilly. Defender Joanne Monaghan moved into the midfield position where she seemed comfortable giving a player of the game performance and netting 0-2 in the second half.
The game started with a fine point from Joanne McKenna after a pass from Fiona Ward. Mayo used the space well and were able to pick out their forwards with ease with all six forwards on the score sheet.
Joanne McKenna was accurate with her free-taking putting Mayo ahead with a well taken free. Indeed the two McKenna sisters were in form netting 0-8 in the first half.
Imelda Mullarkey and Colette McGoldrick also pointed for Mayo as Rockland struggled to get the ball past the midway point. Jonnie Foley and Jenny Kirby tried hard for Rockland but their attacks were thwarted by the stingy Mayo defense who gave nothing away.
New recruit to Mayo Kathleen McEvily registered her first score before the break leaving Mayo leading 0-12 to 0-0.
In the second half it was more of the same with the Rockland backs under constant pressure. Cathy Dunleavy Tara Loftus and Amanda McShane worked hard to stem the Mayo attack, however Mayo had their kicking boots on and scored five goals in the second half, two from Kathleen McEvily, one each for Imelda Mullarkey, Joanne McKenna and Una Kennedy.
Joanne McKenna added on three more points to her tally with Cathy McKenna another point. Joanne Monaghan pushed forward throughout this half and got her name on the score sheet with two fine points.
It is difficult to assess Mayo from this performance but they continue to improve, bonding well as a team, and demonstrating an ability to move the ball quickly from the backs to the forward line and most important have forwards who are able to take their scores.
Rockland continues to have difficulty fielding a full 15 and a consistent team. They had strong performances from Teresa Doyle in goals, Cathy Dunleavy, Tara Loftus and Amanda McShane in the back line and Jonnie Foley, Kerry Ann Galvin and Jenny Kirby tried in vain to register a score.
