In a rarity in the often messy and contentious prize-fighting business, where most break-ups are settled in courtrooms, the split is amicable.
“Both parties have expressed interest in working together in the future,” the fighter’s manager and wife Cheryl, said in a statement last Friday.
Under the Sports Network banner, Warren fulfilled Wayne’s dream of fighting, once again, in his Belfast hometown and challenging for another world title.
“Wayne has not fought since March, and both he, and Mr. Warren felt that there was nothing left for him to achieve in Britain. There are bigger fights for Wayne in the US so he has decided to continue his career in the States,” Cheryl said.
The Las Vegas-based fighter, who has been mulling a move to London, has received many offers in the past few weeks and is still contemplating which direction to go.
“He is considering several deals which would have him back in the ring as early as February,” Cheryl reported.
“I am always open to offers and have been in contact with Top Rank about a fight with Paulie Ayala,” McCullough added. “I would also love a fight with Manny Pacquaio, so if he is interested in fighting me, his team can contact my manager.”
Ayala is a super bantamweight contender while Pacquaio, from the Philippines, is regarded as the best featherweight in the world following his impressive knockout victory over Nassem Hamed’s conqueror Marco Antonio Barrera last month.
McCullough assured fight fans that he would be back soon — better than ever.
“I have been in the gym since May, working and improving every day. I enjoy being in the gym and can’t wait get back in the ring.
“Even though I lost my last fight, I still have the hunger and know I can become a World Champion again!”
McCullough was the World Boxing Council (WBC) 122-pound titlist from
1995 to 1997 when he stepped up to challenge for the super bantamweight crown.
Now aged 33, his last bout was an unsuccessful bid for Scott Harrison’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight belt in Scotland last March.
Harrison, who’s also promoted by Frank Warren, lost the title to
Manuel Medina in his next fight, but regained it two weeks ago.
