McEnroe, a brilliant player best known for shouting at referees during his playing days, says that his show will stand out from the pack because it will be “unpredictable.”
“It’s an opportunity to do something besides sports,” he told the New York Post. “And to do it on a regular basis.”
Look for Mac’s show to be heavy on political discourse.
“I love politics,” he said. “And I’d love to interview politicians to learn about them myself.” One can only hope that, when faced with political doublespeak or filibustering, Mac the Mouth will let loose with his trademark phrase — the one that made him the scourge of tennis officials everywhere: “You cannot be serious!”
Mac may try to attract a larger audience by enlisting his wife, singer Patti Smythe of the ’80s pop band Scandal, to lead his in-house music section. Patti, while not particularly active in political circles, has a couple of musical catchphrases of her own: “Shootin’ down the walls of heartache — Bang! Bang! — I am the warrior!” and the ever popular “Goodbye to You!”
Sounds like “Meet the Press” star Tim Russert won’t have much to worry about.
