Merging Moments

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

“The combination proposed by Bank of Ireland would involve the establishment of a unified corporate structure with a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange, the retention of a listing on the Irish Stock Exchange and with its head office in Dublin,” the bank said in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.
Formal discussions have not taken place yet, the statement said.
BoI shares fell moderately at the news, but Abbey National’s price climbed.
The Irish government stepped in recently and blocked a proposed merger between BoI and Allied Irish Banks, saying that such a merger would be bad for competition in Ireland.
