Rangers captured the U-12 League title in Rockland on Saturday with a 5-4 to 1-7 victory over a gallant Rockland side. After 30 minutes of competitive football, one point separated the sides. Emmett Woods, Robert Daly, John White, Michael Dunne were rock solid in defense for Rockland.
Early in the second half Rangers took a firm grip on the game. A five-player movement out of defense by Peter Woods, Ronan McGoldrick, Mike Wixzorek, Sean Twomey and Kevin O’Driscoll resulted in O’Driscoll sending the ball into the net for Rangers. Lorcan Malone then fielded the kick out, flighted a pinpoint pass to Errol Askisi, who placed a low drive to the Rockland net.
Back came Rockland. A Nick Mangan-to-Sean McGrath passing movement then went to Stephen Spellman, who scored a great goal. Rangers took the game to their rivals again and majors by Steven Cassels, Eamon Nugent, Sean Twomey and three minors by captain Chris Cassels sealed victory.
In the U-14 League final, played at Teaneck, N.J., Sunday morning, Rockland added the League title to their championship success with a 3-10 to 2-7 victory over a determined St. Barnabas team. Glen Roche, Caleb Chaing, Peter Kennedy and Seamus Keane excelled for Rockland. Kevin Hannon, Barry Sullivan, Tom McGovern and Joe Mulligan were best for St. Barnabas.
